Herbal Medicine
These are the types of herbal medication that I prescribe in my complementary medicine practice.
Tinctures
Tinctures are the standard medicines prescribed by herbalists. Tinctures are made with alcohol, which is used both to preserve the medicine and to extract the active ingredients from the plant by acting as a solvent. As a guide, 100ml is usually one week's medication. A blend of 3 or 4 tinctures is usually dispensed to create a specific medicine for a patient. Medications are usually taken three times daily with meals. |

Aromatic Distilled Water
These medicinal waters are distilled using fresh plants and spring water. They contain essential oils, are alcohol-free and suitable for children. |

Capsules
Capsules are made from a combination of dried ground powders that are blended and encapsulated for each patient's individual needs. |
 |
|
|
Tablets
Tablets are made from a combination of synergistic herbs. |

Dried Medicinal Herbs
Single or Combination
Dried herbs are taken as teas usually 3 times a day. Over the years dried herbs are being prescribed less and less by herbalists in favour of tinctures, but they have the added advantage of containing such valuable nutrients as selenium, potassium and magnesium which are contained in the soil in which they have grown. |

Creams & Ointments (external use only)
Creams and Ointments are made at Greenleaves' Pharmacy and are for external use only. They are given for skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis and to apply (for example) to varicose veins and ulcers. Creams are blended from combinations of base cream, essential oils, aromatic waters, fixed oils and plant extracts. |
